DME provided the design of a new high-pressure steam boiler plant on the North end of EB’s Groton Campus (design completed January 2022). The project required demolishing their existing 1950s boiler plant building and a complete replacement. The new 2,500 ft2 building will be elevated above the 100-year flood plane to house (2) 500 bhp firetube boilers, deaerator, condensate surge tank, and complete boiler plant autonomous controls.
The team also coordinated a new 850 ft piping bridge for the 10″ HPS line to traverse the north end of the campus and leave room for submarine traffic below between buildings. To ensure the structural engineers had adequate information to design the building foundation and bridge structures, DME coordinated geotechnical boring investigation and soil bearing testing to eliminate risks for EB in construction.
DME acted as the prime design consultant managing sub-consultants for architectural, structural, civil, geotechnical, and thermal pipe stress analysis. DME’s engineering team performed all mechanical, electrical, fire alarm, protection, and plumbing design.
